Sonic The Hedgehog Movie Review
Sonic the Hedgehog Review
This film has been in development hell for a while. Now that it’s finally here, I am going to dissect it (I will have more frequent reviews[sorry for the wait guys]). Being one of those CGI/Live-Action Buddy Films, I had vibes of Hop(which I’ll talk about later). But, you never really know.
Will this film goes fast and speed around for years and years, or will it lose its race and eat some dust? Well, let’s find out in the 2020 videogame movie, Sonic The Hedgehog! (SPOILERS AHEAD)
The Story Review
The story of Sonic the Hedgehog is pretty simple. Sonic lives on Earth and he knocks the power off because he goes super fast. This leads the government to call an exterminator named Doctor Ivo Robotnik. With the help of Sherif Tom Wachowski, Sonic must stop Robotnik from hunting him down and find his way to his new home.
Well, why is he on Earth? Because of his adoptive owl mom named Longclaw sending him away to save him. Weird and odd, but okay. Anyways, the story is super mindblowing, especially coming from a video game movie. Love it or hate it, there’s no doubt that it is a great and funny story that is mindblowing.
The Characters Review
You know this formula already. There are more live-action characters than animated characters, but they do a great job, unlike the other films where they kind of suck. First, let’s address the elephant in the room. Sure, Sonic isn’t the most popular character of all time, but he is pretty popular with the people. And I am aware that his look was stupidly ugly before, but Sonic looks amazing in this film(I’ll stretch on this more later).
He’s a funny character and he is like his game counterpart. Tom is also pretty good, too. I was getting vibes of Hop(another movie where James Marsden interacts with a CGI character), but I was shocked to see that he tried his hardest for real in this film. He is one of the highlights of the movie. What about Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik? HE WAS AMAZING! He is the biggest part of the movie that I enjoyed the most.
The dance scene that he does and the improv he pulls off is one of a kind! So overall, the characters are great!
The Action/Visuals Review
The visuals bring Sonic to life. Even though he was completely botched with the original design, he looks exactly like his game counterpart. He looks so cute too! I would very much like to have him as a pet. Obviously, I’m just kidding with you guys. The action on the other hand…Oh my god! What stunning action you have a movie!
My favorite action moments are the bar fight where Sonic does the Quicksilver thing, the car fight, where Robotnik tears apart Tom’s truck while trying to capture him and Sonic, and of course, the final climactic battle between Robotnik and Sonic. I really do hope that the future sequel brings more action and more fun into Sonic’s universe.
What else can I say? I thought that this film was a funny, heartwarming, and surprising movie. The post-credits scenes are so good too, I won’t give those away, you have to see the movie for yourself. I loved Sonic The Hedgehog!
It was a very good movie and I highly recommend this film to any video game fan. Although I’m not a huge fan of Sonic, I really loved this film. It is no doubt the best video game movie of all time, take the time to check it out please and speed up and run to the theater to watch it again and again! 10/10

If you are a critic or a general audience-goer, then this movie may come across as just another fun kids’ film. It is mostly aimed at that audience. But if you are, like me, a Sonic The Hedgehog fan, then what Jeff Fowler and his team have done here will leave you stunned and pleased. The references to the games and the callbacks to this character’s almost 30-year gaming history will undoubtedly make any fan beam with pride.
